Add an introduction and conclusion. Essays should include introduction and conclusion paragraphs that are separate from the body paragraphs. Explain that the purpose of the introduction is to give the thesis but also get the reader's attention through something like a quote or statistic.

Honestly, getting students started with their essay is the hardest part.
It takes longer than you think to write an essay. While writing an average undergraduate essay can take between two and four hours, first class essays will take a little longer. The key to getting the best marks in your essays is in your preparation. Before you start hammering at the keys, make sure you understand the question properly.
Since students have been writing hooks for both english adn History classes, I wanted to push their thinking and really get them to connect to their thesis and intrigue readers about their topic. I found that after going through these samples thoroughly and also having students come up with and sharing out their own, that more kids got the hang of it and their hooks were stronger.
At this point, I am pausing to allow students to introduce the topic by writing the hook (first sentence) of their essay (CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.9-10.2a).They will spend 10 minutes developing an effective hook statement, referring back to my hook and those that they shared from the self-selected reading texts.
